Kinja'd!!!

After the road trip to NY, I was a bit disillusioned with the 4Runner. It was an ok ride, but not the greatest. Part of that was my own fault and something I should have taken care of after I initially installed the new wheels/tires. After I put on the heavy E load BFGs, I had a vibration from about 60 MPH and up. Nothing horrible, but noticeable enough. Generally, my driving is around town, so the higher speed vibration was forgotten until I was on the highway again. I know heavy tires can be a pain to balance, and other 4Runner peeps complain of slight vibes after a lift. I chalked my experience up to typical 4Runner and decided to live with it.

The 4Runner was due for a tire rotation and balance, so I took it to Discount Tire, where I bought the tires for the free lifetime balance/rotation. Normally that would be included with ToyotaCare, but not at my dealer (or possibly any) after I installed the 2” lift and 275 BFGs.  Anyway, holy cow, I should’ve brought the 4Runner back after the tires were initially installed. It’s like a new vehicle. Zero vibes, rides smooth, smooth, and feels great. I had it on the highway last night, and as I accelerated to 60, I mentally prepared for the vibes, and nothing....I kept accelerating and, nothing....up to 80MPH, nothing.

tl;dr Rotate and balance your tires, and get them rebalanced if you have vibrations. I was silly and ignored it for far too long. And don’t take anyone’s word for “this is typical”.

+1. I thought I needed everything rubber for the suspension on the M3. Turns out an alignment and a new set of tires fixed everything.

E-rated tires on that little guy?! That’s gotta harshen up the ride.

We recently replaced the tires on our Outback. The constant pull to the right that should have disappeared when the dealership did an alignment and rotated the tires is now gone. I suspect they didn’t actually rotate the tires. I’m getting tired of their shoddy work. Now I have to find a better place to service our Subarus.

interesting anecdote - The solution to this problem for the Land Cruiser was to NOT rotate the tires.  The weight balance on the cruiser is pretty close to 50/50 and with AWD I’ve found that the fronts and rears wear evenly.  However the fronts cup a little from scrubbing and while they don’t seem to affect the front, if I put the fronts on the backs I get vibes.

Every time I take my Jeep in for a tire rotation I’m tempted to mark them with chalk so I can check after , especially since I get a 5-tire rotation and most shops don’t seem to have that knowledge.

It’s probably a good practice to mark them. If nothing else, confirm that they actually did the work.

275s are the recommended width limit for the wheels, although many install 285s. There aren’t a ton of C load 275s out there. In an off road tread Falkens were the only option at the time, and those are an even heavier (weight wise) tire than the BFGs.

The ride isn’t harsh at all, surprisingly.

I bought the lifetime alignment package from Firestone after I installed the lift. After researching alignments locally, a bunch of the Tacoma guys found a tech at a local Firestone that they really trusted.

Funny enough, now I need to go through this whole process with the Mustang, although it genuinely needs all new suspension bits, too.

Even before I put these tires on, when I went to the dealer for the ToyotaCare 5k tire rotation, I watched them not rotate the tires. Discount Tire  has treated me well, so I’ll continue to use them for tires/rotations. Well, other than the initial balance, but that’s my fault for not going back.

I run the E-range K02s on my Suburban in a 265/75R16 , but it has seriously stiff springs and I run 80psi rear/60psi front, so my impressions of the ride quality might be skewed a tad.

Interesting. They balanced the tires, too, so I’m sure that made the difference for me. One thing I didn’t do was check air pressure after I got it back. I should go see what they put them at.

Ah, I run much lower, and my springs run a little on the softer side. Since I haven added any weight, I didn’t go crazy with my spring rates when I replaced them.

It’s amazing what a difference the details can make.

I was running E rated 33” AT’s on my two door Jeep. That ride was one spicey meatball. Swapping them onto my Tundra. Tundra only weighs a hundred pounds or so more than the Jeep, but I’m thinking the IF S will smooth the ride out a bit.

Wow!! I’m at 71R /51F on my Transit 250 when running unloaded, probably 6000lbs . 235/65-C16 E tires.

interesting. how frequently were you rotating? i wonder if more frequent rotations (maybe every 5k miles?) might prevent it?

Unloaded I’m at 6,750, and when hauling the family and the travel trailer it’s 16,500 GCW.

ah, ok. I was thinking your Suburban wasn’t going to be heavier than my Transit. But mine’s an empty Cargo and you’ve got all the seats, carpet, interior crap.

Every 10k. I've had these tires for 30k now and they wear even and don't vibe

Yep. It’s a heavy pig. 3/4 ton 4x4 with seating for 7. It weighs over 1,000 pounds more than my previous 1/2 ton Suburban.

With e rated tires your pressure is everything. After doing the 7 lbs method I find 30 psi is fine unloaded. Even with this weight. I do 32 just to be on the safe side

oh yeah, plus the extra weight of the 4x4.  I had never considered my Transit svelte before!
